In keeping with the Disney Halloween costume theme…
I mean yes, Cruella was a horrible individual that PETA would’ve probably hired a secret hitman for, but damn, girl had some style. I mean seriously, she sort of is a fashion icon.
If you’re planning on channeling a little Cruella this Halloween, first of all, good for you, you’ve already done half the work having a great Halloween costume, you’ve picked someone recognizable that will be fun to get all dolled up for.
What’s great about Cruella is that she has a really simple and foolproof color palette:
Scarlet, Jet black, White and/or cream, with touches of turquoise make this look super easy to shop out! Each item from the composite below is under $50, and you may even already have some of the looks in your closet, like a slinky, little black dress.
The two key elements to this outfit are a sexy, form-fitting black dress with a deep v-neck and the white coat. Forever 21 is the best undercover costume shop when it comes to translating costumes into real clothing. So is AMI Clubwear, just make sure you don’t shop the portion of their site actually dedicated to Halloween costumes if you’re not trying to show too much skin.
A white coat may be hard to track down and you shouldn’t spend too much on it because we all know that Halloween hands wrapped around Solo cups are prone to spillage. You can even pick up a cheapie bath robe, toss the belt, and sling it off the shoulder to make your black dress the center of attention. If you want you can even grab some black spray paint and spot the robe up to make it look like a dalmatian print.
There are ton of makeup tutorials out there for Cruella’s look, especially with the debut of the MAC Venomous Villians line. Makeup Guru Kandee Johnson has an amazing and very costume-y tutorial that perfectly matches the cartoon version of Cruella:
But if you’re looking for something a little more subtle, keep in mind these few elements to make sure you nail the look:
- A high-shine red lip. (I love Revlon’s “Love That Red”)
- A pigmented turquoise shadow with a complimentary darker shade to give your shadow depth. (NYX is an amazing drugstore brand that delivers high quality and pigment, I’d cover the lid with this and blend this into the outer corners of the eyelid to give the look some dimension.
- Plush blackest-black lashes. Halloween is a great time to try rocking false lashes or you can just line your eye with liquid liner and coat your lashes with tons of mascara!
While Cruella could rock a schizophrenic lion’s mane, I prefer more of a retro hairstyle full of body and wave, like this:
Megan Fox’s hair in this look is the perfect amount of untamed for a Cruella look and creates a good jumping-off point to blast hair with some color spray. You can go traditional and split the color down the middle like Cruella is known for, or you can make the look a little more chic, but spraying certain pieces, like Lady Gaga did here:
